My little one eyed bandit

Well today we had a rough day...
At the beginning of the summer i took my son to his 5 yr well child appointment. He was perfectly healthy except in one area... His vision. The year before he failed the eye exam, however the Doctor didn't seem concerned. He said its common for kids at age 4 to fail the test due to a couple of reasons, 1. they cant focus and 2. they aren't a 100% with shapes, letters etc. But this year when he failed the test with the exact same results it sent up red flags. The doctor then referred us to an optometrist to have it looked into a little more closely.
The results were bad... I knew this but didn't expect it to be this bad.
His vision in his left eye is 20/400 (legally Blind).
They then prescribed him glasses hoping it would help strengthen his eye. They said at this age there is always a chance for correction. They just needed to train the eye to be stronger. He has had is glasses for 2 months now and has finally gotten used to them. I hoped at todays follow up there would be progress and good news.
I was wrong.
They said his vision even with the glasses is the same. How? because he not only looks over his glasses, but because his eye has never know a clear image. So it is having trouble processing images through the glasses. This means the images are still blurry for him. So today they told him he would now have to wear an eye patch, all day/everyday for at least 2 months.
The first sobbing words out of his mouth were, "I cant look like penguin!!! I'm batman!!! Mom penguin wears an eye patch and he is a bad guy weirdo... now im going to look like a bad guy weirdo!"
It has been a very hard day for him, every person has asked him what happened and he starts crying every time. Poor Guy. So any eye patch crafts or activities you might have would help. Lets hope the next appointment goes better. This is going to be a painful and hard process for him. He already can't see and has started complaining of headaches.

On another note... My blog is finally coming together! I made all of the suggested changes, and added a few extra goodies. I also would like to announce that we are now on Facebook. So if you want to know what we are doing in between posts... check us out.

Awww... poor guy!

I wonder if you can create different cartoon-type eyeball patches, so that way he has one regular eye, and one "cartoon" eye (like Homer Simpson's eyes that stick out).

If he is into Harry Potter, you could try making a patch that looks like "Mad Eye's" eye, but that would be tricky.

I like the changes to the blog, BTW. : )

I had to come comment. I had/have the SAME issue with my son. I was actaully at first told he needed surgery to help stregthen the muscle. Since they said it would not help his vision at all.. I passed.
I was NOT in love with the doctor so for his check up this year I went wome place else. P.S he is almost blind out of one eye, has super strong glasses and was supposed to be pathched when at home (via old doctors orders). However patching a 4 year old didn't work here.. and he was almost never with a patch on. So next appointment went just as bad and surgery kept being PUSHED on me
This year ( new doc) I couldn't read the letters on the wall that he was seeing w/o the glasses. Doc said he was great and gave me the same eye can't focus speech yours did. He still and always will need glasses but he improved a lot and she said I could still patch if I wanted to but it doesn't need to be for more then two hours a day.
SO there is light at the end of the tunnel and I have found that a LOT of kids have the same issue.
Good luck and he is a cutie with glasses!
Oh and strange enough my son is a Batman FREAK..lol

OK, I have to comment on this...I wore a patch on my eye for 4 years to try and correct it. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy at times, but we made do. I put stickers on it some days when I was younger, but was done with it when I was 8. To be honest, yes, some kids made fun of me, but that excitement wore off after a short while. Now, we joke around about it with anyone that knew me back then...it's a little joke. So, tell him not to despair! Kids forget SO quickly so while it might be tough at first, the kids in school with him will forget before you know it.

One piece of advice: to try and help my mom organized something with the teacher so that everyone in my class had to wear a patch for the day for others to know what I was going through. HORRIBLE idea. That just had them make fun of me ever more. HAHA!

Oh and by the way, I do wear contacts, have astigmatism, and pretty darn horrible eye sight, but having my Mom MAKE me wear that thing everyday did the job...so you'll have to be tough, but it's worth it!!!

What a crazy day, I feel for you and the little guy. When I was 8 I had to wear an eye patch for a couple of weeks. I'm sending good thoughts that everything works out and gets corrected soon, he does look like a cute little pirate!

Aww, I remember when I got my glasses in first grade. Sorry to your little man. I know it can be so hard.

Tell him he can look like a pirate (like in the SpongeBob pic). I know its a stretch but when you feel bad you'll try anything for your kiddo.

BTW, following you from Thursday friends!

Hmmmmmmmm
Pirate movies maybe? Some movie that makes pirates cool? If he was a little older he could use it to pick up chicks.

You could also put some cool design on it. Maybe if he likes sports his fave teams logo etc.

Good luck!

Awww, poor little man. I do have to say he wears the patch very well. He is such a cutie!

I had a friend that also wore a patch for several years while growing up and I remember him hating it and feeling like people were judging him even at the age we were at. I hope this technique is able to help him out! I know it has to be tough and frustrating not being able to see at such a young age.

Good Luck!

My 3 yr old daughter has strabismus and is also severely farsighted. She has had her glasses for a year now and once she started registering that things were easier to see with her glasses it was like the light turned on. It did take her about 3 months to get to that point though, she was terrible for looking over the tops of her glasses for the longest time. Good luck, and keep strong.

Hi, your son looks adorable, with our without a patch!
I wanted to share with you a link I saw a year or so ago. They are cute eye patches for kids. I didn't have a need for one, but I thought they were such a good idea I still remembered them.

Anyway try http://www.etsy.com/shop/hammill178
or search etsy for eyepatch and children and you will have more options.

Aww the poor little guy :( At least you caught it early though, and hopefully you will be able to rectify how bad his eyesight is. I probably had bad eyesight for anywhere from 6 months to a year before my parents realized it, when I was young. I'm not legally blind or anything, but I have a very high prescription and my corneas are too thin for Lasik, so I know that having bad eyesight can be maddening.
